Principal's Message

The Athena School is an independent school in the heart of Newtown in Sydney’s Inner West.

Our approach to teaching is friendly and caring and works to develop a passion for learning. We encourage developing each student’s individual talents, leading to confident, self-motivated students with enquiring minds.

As part of their individual program, students complete courses that teach them the tools of how to learn – as per the educational methods developed by L. Ron Hubbard. This is in addition to meeting the NSW Education Standards Authority requirements. By year 10 they have developed the skills to study independently and successfully in whatever career they choose.

We accomplish application of the study tools in the lower school by observing when a young child needs to see or touch or hear what he or she is learning about. We incorporate lots of excursions and activities in early learning.  We watch a child’s progress carefully so that he or she is moving forward at their own pace and we ensure that new words and terms are fully understood in a way that even young children can easily grasp.

Our Montessori Prep Class (Kindy minus 1) uses the philosophy of Maria Montessori and provides a safe, nurturing environment as an introduction to school life for our students. Our aim is to guide the children to become confident and independent learners in preparation for Kindergarten. Students participate in exercises of practical life, sensorial activities, language enrichment, mathematic activities, and cultural studies. The Montessori philosophy aligns beautifully with traditional Athena values. We also hold in common the friendly and unhurried approach to learning, so Athena Montessori is a perfect start for children.
