About Athena

The Athena School was established in 1986 by a group of parents who wanted more for their children. They wanted a school where children would not fall through the cracks and where children were taught at the level that they were at, rather than a one size fits all approach. They wanted a school where phonics was taught thoroughly and systematically so that every student would become a great reader. They wanted a school which encouraged a hands-on approach to learning, where students would be able to apply what they had learned and where skills for making good choices were taught. They wanted a school that welcomed and encouraged parent participation and so The Athena School was born.

The Athena School is now an independent school in the heart of Newtown in Sydney’s Inner West.

School life is about more than academics. Learning is about more than books and information. We take a holistic approach to learning which involves attention to the all-round development of students intellectually, physically, creatively, spiritually, emotionally and socially with good communication an self-discipline.

We look forward to helping your child achieve their educational goals and becoming the best version of themselves.

The Athena School is located on the heritage premises of what used to be St Joseph’s Primary School and Convent. The beautiful grounds with their huge camphor laurel and eucalyptus trees provide an aesthetic and naturally shaded environment which the students can work and play in.
