Various staff at The Athena School were familiar with the Montessori method. This initial contact and interest, combined with the fact that two of our sister schools in England and America have incorporated the Montessori Program, led us to the door of Montessori Foundation Australia to get the assistance we needed to create an authentic Montessori environment for our Prep students.

The philosophy of Maria Montessori aligns beautifully with our own with regards to the treatment and respect of students. We also hold in common the friendly and unhurried approach to learning.

“The child's development follows a path of successive stages of independence, and our knowledge of this must guide us in our behaviour towards him. We have to help the child to act, will and think for himself. This is the art of serving the spirit, an art which can be practised to perfection only when working among children.” (The Absorbent Mind, p. 257)

“We must clearly understand that when we give the child freedom and independence, we are giving freedom to a worker already braced for action, who cannot live without working and being active.” (The Absorbent Mind, Chapter 8, p. 91.)
